Intradialytic Parenteral Nutrition (IDPN)

Intradialytic parenteral nutrition is a parenteral nutrition solution attached to the venous drip chamber on the dialysis machine and infused with the return blood flow. IDPN is indicated for patients on hemodialysis who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition and who are unable to meet their nutritional needs by oral diet, tube feeding, or daily parenteral nutrition. IDPN is composed of patient-specific levels of amino acids, dextrose, lipids, injectable multivitamins and other additives as determined necessary and compatible.
Each IDPN infusion provides approximately 450-1000 kcal and 75-115 g protein. The goal of IDPN as a supplement to an oral diet is to meet the patient's estimated energy and protein needs. Length of therapy is dependent on the patient's degree of malnutrition, nutritional goals, tolerance and the prescribed solution. IDPN can be discontinued when the patient is able to meet all nutrient needs by oral diet, tube feeding or parenteral nutrition. The patient's requirement for IDPN therapy may exceed 6 to 12 months, and should be re-evaluated every 3 to 6 months.
